Blackball - 10th Event 18-20 March 2022
10 years of Blackball(s)!
Blackball 2022 was another fantastic weekend organised by hosts Wee Knackers and Philup.
With 72 hashers registered, this 10 year anniversary run was the largest yet. Quite a difference to the 2012 event when Christchurch hashers camped in Philup’s and Wee Knackers’ garden.
As modern hashers do, most people parked their campers and other non-tent sleeping facilities at either the Hilton (formerly known as) or the backpackers, with a few experienced attendees taking advantage of the unusually quiet hall.
The weekend started en route from Christchurch with stops at the Sheffield pie shop and Lake Brunner pub. Then on to Blackball where the hashers doubled the town population.
Friday night was mainly at the Workingmen’s Club, where the beers flowed, the op shop became a formal runway and supper was served.
Saturday morning was a slow start but once the sun came out, hashers were raring to go. In traditional hash fashion, a lengthy run briefing demonstrated the markings that might be encountered on the run accompanied by detailed instructions that were promptly forgotten.
After a false start for the runners, the pack regrouped and runners and walkers alike headed to the stream, heckling the Larikin cricket players on the way.
The first river crossing was a piece of for the pack of experienced hashers, even the slippery bits didn’t phase the pack.
The next bit, an onerous walk up a dry river bed found the pack in desperate need of refuelling beer.
When an obvious OP was passed with no beer, a tedious uphill climb through gorse and ferns was really just a walk in the park for the experienced pack.
Finally, finally, finally the PS was reached with plenty of well-earned beers and RTDs waiting.
After well drawn out PS, it was choose your own trail On Home. Something about going either straight over the false trail back into town or right into the bush for another hash adventure.
Those opting for the hash adventure route were rewarded with a hill climb with a great 360 view and old mine workings.
Eventually the pack regrouped at the domain where lunch and beer was served with a cricket game for entertainment. A fine circle was held and then the pack dispersed for showers, naps, sex and beer.
The evening festivities were split between the Hilton (formerly known as) and the Workingmen’s Club.
Sunday morning brought sore heads, foggy memories, brekkie and a short wreckovery walk to the mine memorial.
After another drawn out fine circle, hashers grudgingly dispersed back to all parts of NZ with promises of returning next year and see you soon at NOMAD, Winter Camp or both or neither.
THANK YOU Wee Knackers and Philup for another great weekend.
Also thank you to STD and Dingaling for their silent support leading up to and during the weekend.
